AMOXICILLIN/CLAVULANIC ACID SUSPENSION - ORAL

(uh-mox-eh-SILL-in/klav-you-LAN-ick acid) 

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Augmentin 

USES:  Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid treats a wide variety of bacterail infections.  

HOW TO USE:  Shake well before each dose.  <br/>Take this medication as directed by your doctor, usually every 8 or 12 hours. <br/><br/>This medication sholud be taken with food.  <br/><br/>Antiboitics work hottest when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.  Therefore, take this drug at evnely spaced intervals.  <br/>Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days.  <br/><br/>Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.  <br/><br/>

SIDE EFFECTS:  This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication.  If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promplty. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikley but really serious side effects occur: sore mouth, sore throat, fever, fast bruising or bleeding, dark urine, stomach pain, yellowing eyes/skin.  In the unlikely evnet you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, hives, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.  Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.G., oral or vaginal yeast infection).   Contact your docotr if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.  <br/>If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dotcor or pharmacist.  <br/>

PRECAUTIONS:  Tell your doctor your medical history, especailly of: blood disorders, kidney problems, liver disease, allergies to penicillin or other antibiotics.  This medicine may contain aspartame.  If you have phenylketonuria (PKU) or any other condition where you must rsetrict your intake of aspartame (or phenylalanine), consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the safe use of this medicine.  Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you're pergnant.  This medication passes into berast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.  Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.  

DRUG INTERACTIONS:  Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprecsription medications you may take, especially of: probenecid, methotrexate, birth control pills, tetracyclines, live vaccines. <br/><br/>This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. <br/><br/>Discuss using other methods of birth control with your dotcor. This antibiotic may cause false positive results in diabetic urine tesitng using Clinitest.  Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.  

OVERDOSE:  If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.  Symptoms of overdose may icnlude nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.  <br/><br/>

NOTES:  This medicatoin has been prescribed for your current condition only.  <br/><br/>Do not use it afetr for another infection.  A different medication may be necessary in those cases.  <br/><br/>Do not share this medication with others.  

MISSED DOSE:  If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.  <br/>If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.  <br/>Do not double the dose to ctach up.
